Omaha Beach Consolidation to 8 June 1944

Map Code: Ax00505

The assault on Omaha made the slowest progress in the first few days after the initial landings. The topography of the beach with its large bluffs, from which German guns could easily mow down American troops, made it difficult to stamp out German resistance in the area. After supplies were moved ashore, a more concerted effort to push inland progressed but met pockets of resistance, such as at Formigny, where German troops re-gathered to hold off the advance. At the eastern edge of the Omaha boundary, troops were able to make contact with the Rangers who had suffered heavy losses whilst taking the Pointe du Hoc observation point. An upcoming assault was prepared against the Maisy battery which had been the main source of artillery fire over Omaha and Utah beaches. The preparations for Mulberry harbour A, which would come ashore at Omaha, also began on 7 June.
