Between 23 July–3 September 1916 the Allies launched an offensive on the German defensive position on Pozières Ridge, as part of the Battle of the Somme. Of the five Allied divisions involved, three belonged to 1 Anzac Corps. On 23 July at 12.30 am the Australian 1st and 3rd Brigades of the 1st Division, supported at its rear by the British 48th Division, advanced towards Pozières village where they rapidly captured it from the Germans. Between 23–29 July, the Australian 2nd Division moved towards the north of Pozières where they intended to capture the German trench lines. On 29 July, the Australian 2nd Division were driven back with heavy losses. On 4 August, the Australians successfully took the northeastern corner. Between 4 August–3 September a slow push towards the German position at Mouquet Farm made little progress. The Canadians relieved the Australians on 3 September. By 8 September the Ridge was still in German hands.
