By the beginning of August 1915, the Gallipoli campaign needed reinvigoration; the desperately high casualties from the fighting were beginning to be matched by those from disease. The new plan was an assault at Suvla Bay, to the north of Anzac Cove, where the antipodean forces were entrenched. The landing was successfully achieved and wholly unanticipated, but the Anzacs were unable to break through to join up with the new forces, and on 10 August the Ottoman forces counterattacked, pushing the Allies back. After reinforcements arrived, a last-ditch attempt to unite the Allied forces was made at Scimitar Hill. When it failed, Allied High Command’s priorities turned to Europe. An evacuation was finally ordered in December, with the last troops leaving Helles Bay at the end of the month. The human cost of the campaign was horrific, with close to 200,000 casualties per side.
