Gold and Juno Beaches Consolidation to 9 June 1944

$3.95

Map Code: Ax00502

Following the establishment of the beachheads on both Juno and Gold beaches and the movement of the bulk of armoured troops ashore by 7 June, all ground covered under the D-Day objectives was taken. To the east, the city of Bayeux was liberated from German occupation after British forces that had landed at Gold were able to push the defenders out. Most reinforcements had been drawn east to defend Caen and were not numerous enough to hold ground in the east. The 12th SS Hitlerjugend Panzer division, mainly comprised of Hitler Youth trainees, fiercely defended Caen in front of Canadian forces from Juno. German forces in the radar station at Douvres-la-Délivandre were fully surrounded by 6 June. By 9 June the first Phoenix cassions were sunk in the waters out from Arromanches in preparation for Mulberry harbour B, which would greatly increase Allied supply capabilities once it was assembled.
