Map Code: Ax00342

Following the Third Battle of Kharkov, the situation on the Eastern front briefly turned in the favour of the Germans as they recaptured minimal ground to the east of the city. The feat of Marshal von Manstein’s triumph against his enemies’ westward momentum on the eastern front is widely regarded as one of the stand out pieces of tactical mastery of the entire war. The loss of General Paulus’s 6th Army at Stalingrad was partly relieved by the freeing-up of troops from the Rzhev salient in the north, which was relinquished in March 1943 as Soviet pressure to protect Moscow became too great. By this point in the war it was becoming clear that Hitler’s refusal to allow his troops to concede ground had resulted in a number of instances of German defeat which may have been avoided had a more pragmatic approach to tactical retreat been taken
