Assault on Omaha Beach: Situation at Midday 6 June 1944

Map Code: Ax00521

The assault on Omaha was particularly tough due to the large bluffs that overlook the beach. Above the cliffs were the main German defences, which had a clear view of the entire beach. The only cover for the attacking American troops was a small shingle bank and sea wall at the high tide level 200 yards (183 m) from where they landed. Due to rough seas the landing craft were pushed off course on their way to shore meaning that troops were dropped in the wrong landing zones. Adding to this confusion were heavy casualties sustained during the run up the beach and a lack of tank support, as most were lost before they made it ashore. Groups of surviving soldiers from different battalions were able to assemble at the foot of the bluffs in a few positions that were protected from heavy fire, ready to scale the slopes to engage the German defences.
